Dear Portland Auto Glass,

Over the years, I have had my auto glass repaired many times. I have had small chips and small cracks repaired due to many different reasons. These repairs always look great and I can never even see where the chip or crack even was once they are done fixing it. The one thing I am wondering is if I can just keep getting things repaired if they are able to be rather than ever getting a new windshield? After so many chips and cracks, do I have to have it actually replaced or does it not matter the amount that are fixed on one piece of auto glass? I am just curious because it feels that I have gotten up there with my count and I want to make sure that my windshield is as strong as it can be for safety precautions. I would really appreciate any information you may have for me.

Dear Concerned Repairer,

It is very common for people to just go get their small chips of cracks repaired rather than having to worry about getting an entirely new piece of auto glass. Most people do not even think about the fact that there may be a limit to how many times you can have the glass repaired though. There technically is no limit when it comes to the amount of repairs you can have done to your windshield, but there are some things to consider.

First off, if you have a very high amount of repairs done, it will start to weaken the glass. If your cracks and chips start to add up, they will most likely start to be close in proximity to each other. If this happens, it is much more difficult to fix the small problems and your glass will eventually be all resin rather than a strong auto glass like you want. If this happens, you should consult with your technician about having it replaced.

Secondly, you will need to think about the sizes of cracks and chips you have had over the years. If any of these cracks of chips are larger than a dollar then you should have had it replaced then. That large of repairs will make your glass weaker. The resin is only meant to be used on small problems. When it is used on much larger problems it will not be able to do its job correctly and will not strengthen the glass like it should.

We hope this information has helped you. If you are even questioning how many chips and cracks you have had over the years, you should probably just have your windshield replaced now rather than wait. The fact that it has even come up as a topic makes us think that it may be time for you to have a replacement. If you have any more questions please feel free to contact us.
